MMM State of Motherhood in Europe 2024

Why a survey?

Motherhood remains an under-explored and insufficiently addressed topic in both policy-making and societal discourse, leading to unmet needs and unseen challenges for mothers. To bridge this gap, MMM conducted the State of Motherhood in Europe 2024 survey, gathering insights from 9,600 mothers across 11 EU countries and the UK.

Data is essential for providing evidence and driving change in policy and society. In fact, the survey underscores critical challenges related to mental health, work-life balance, and societal recognition, highlighting the urgent need for reform.

Key findings

  • 67% of mothers report feeling overloaded
  • 55% changed their working status after having a child
  • Mothers handle at least 63% of household and caregiving tasks alone
  • 50% of mothers stated that they suffer from mental issues (depression, anxiety, burnout, peripartum depression, or other)
  • 41% find that their role is not recognised by society
  • What are we going to do with this – what do we fight for – advocacy

Reports

Our call to action

We call for enhanced support for parenthood and maternity including :

  • Enhancing maternal mental health support
  • Expanding specialised breastfeeding support
  • Promoting family-friendly workplaces
  • Recognising and redistributing unpaid family care work
  • Improving and fostering parental leaves
  • Providing quality and affordable childcare

It is time for a collective response. Governments, employers and society at large all have a role to play in creating an environment that lifts mothers up. Support should replace pressure.
